Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has retained leading legal experts in the United States to contest his extradition to Ghana.
Dr. Ayine made the revelation during the government’s Accountability Series on Thursday, December 18, 2025, following the submission of a formal extradition request to US authorities.
“The individual subject to extradition has the right to defend himself in court. I have been informed that Mr. Ofori-Atta has engaged some of the most experienced lawyers in the US to represent him,” Dr. Ayine stated, emphasizing that this development does not deter Ghanaian authorities.
He further explained that US extradition proceedings are handled through the federal court system and can involve multiple levels of judicial review.
“Mr. Ofori-Atta can challenge any ruling through the federal district court, the circuit court, and, if necessary, the US Supreme Court,” Dr. Ayine added.
While acknowledging that the legal process may be lengthy, the Attorney General expressed confidence in Ghana’s extradition request, noting that the ultimate decision now rests with the US judicial system.
