A 25-year-old woman, Vera Asare, has been charged with manslaughter after allegedly pouring a substance suspected to be acid on her boyfriend, 27-year-old Daniel Omane, while he was asleep on November 29, 2024.
Omane, who sustained severe injuries, later died on July 25, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The incident reportedly took place at Bonya, New Juaben South Municipality, in the Eastern Region.
The case, opened at the District Magistrate Court in Koforidua and presided over by Her Worship Nana Ama Depaa Fynn, Esq., was later referred to the Koforidua High Court, as the lower court lacks jurisdiction over manslaughter cases.
Investigations by the Eastern Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) confirmed that the substance used in the attack was acidic. The court noted that if Omane had died instantly, the accused would have faced a murder charge, but due to the delayed death, the charge was adjusted to manslaughter.
The High Court is scheduled to begin hearings on October 13, with Vera Asare currently on remand pending trial.
Meanwhile, the family of the late Daniel Omane is calling for justice. His elder brother, Emmanuel Kofi Boateng, urged the court to ensure the law takes its full course, stressing that although Daniel cannot be brought back, justice would serve as both closure and deterrence.
Omane is survived by a three-year-old daughter he had with the accused.
