The British Council Auditorium on Monday, April 30, 2018, witnessed one of the profoundly contested for competitions in the country as eight (8) top universities skirmished for nobilities in the Kuapa Kokoo/ Millennium Promise Alliance (MPA) ‘The Green Ghana Lecture Series inter-tertiary institutions debate’.
The event was organized as one of the series of activities to commemorate kuapa Kokoo’s 25years of championing sustainable cocoa production in Ghana.
University of Ghana, Legon was eliminated by The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology whiles the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) battles the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). Christian Service University was also denied reaching the finals by the University of Education Winneaba, Kumasi campus and Ashesi University was beaten by University of Cape Coast (UCC).
Speaking at the event was the Managing Director of Kuapa Kokoo, Samuel Adimado, who lamented about the recent declining of cocoa production to country’s economy, “Mr. chairman the cocoa growth sector performance has also witnessed a fall in 2015 at -8%, -7% in 2016 but stabilize at 3% in 2017. This’s a worrying aspect and a drastic action must be taken to revamp agriculture as the mainstay and the largest contributor to our GDP”
He also talked about climate change which is quickly depleting cocoa farmlands and unscrupulous attitude some cocoa farmers who are being lured with money to sell their cocoa land for ‘Galamsey’.
The competing schools debated on the topics
I. The application of Cocoa Scholarships and Infrastructure has not helped enough to groom the next generation of cocoa farmers in Ghana. What are your recommendations going forward with the introduction of the Free Senior High School Policy?
II. Is ICT the answer to achieving maximum growth in the cocoa sector in the wake of Ghana Beyond Aid?
The finals stage of the competition will be held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on May 30, 2018.
