The New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in the Sekyere Kumawu Constituency have today, April 23, 2023 elected Ernest Anim as Parliamentary candidate to lead the party to the 23 May by-election which will be organized by the Electoral Commission (EC) in the Ashanti Region.

Candidates who contested the election included Lawyer Edward Kofi Osei, Dr. Da costa Aboagye, Mr Ernest Yaw Anim, Ama Serwaa, Mr. Kwame Appiah-Kubi, and Osei Hweree Kwame Bempah.

Four days to the primary, the former member of Parliament Yaw Baah who was unseated by the deceased Kumawu MP Philip Basoa stepped down from the race, leaving five candidates.

After the vote count, Ernest Anim won with 194 votes, while his closest contender, Ama Serwaa also has 181 vote.

Addressing the media, Yaw Anim, commended the delegates for electing him to lead the party in the 23 May 2023 by-election.

He assured to work very hard to win the upcoming by-election for the party to retain  the seat.

Ama Serwaa who spoke on behalf of the other four candidates pledged their support to the the candidate elect for the Kumawu by-election.

Former MP for Manhia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah who is Campaign Operation Coordinator in Ashanti Region for Alan Kyeremanteng described the election of Ernest Yaw Anim as Alan Kyeremanteng’s first election knockout to Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.

He said, “it is a clear signal that nobody in NPP can impose a candidate on party delegates. Kumawu constituency has affirmed the NPP tradition for electing its leaders” he said.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, on 3rd April 2023 declared the seat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumawu, Philip Basoa, vacant.

The decision followed the death of Mr Basoah, 53, on March 27, 2023.
