The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has revoked 278 small-scale mining licenses nationwide for regulatory violations and the expiry of operating permits.
The announcement was made by the Ministry’s Spokesperson and Media Relations Officer, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, in a Facebook post.
According to Mr. Schandorf, the move forms part of ongoing reforms to sanitise and regularise Ghana’s small-scale mining sector, with a focus on enforcing environmental and safety standards.
The affected concessions include operations that failed to comply with key regulatory requirements and others that continued mining despite expired permits.
He noted that the decision underscores the Minister’s renewed commitment to instilling accountability and discipline in the small scale mining industry, which continues to grapple with illegal mining and environmental degradation.
The Ministry is expected to release further details on the affected concessions, as well as plans to support compliant and responsible small-scale miners who adhere to legal and environmental guidelines.
