Health officials in the Ashanti Region are raising alarm over the increasing number of breast cancer cases being diagnosed at advanced stages in Ghana, a trend that is significantly reducing survival rates.

According to the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, over 80% of breast cancer cases in the country are detected only when the disease has reached a late stage, greatly limiting treatment options and outcomes.

In 2022 alone, the Ashanti Region recorded 5,024 new cases of breast cancer, with 2,369 deaths largely attributed to late detection.

At the launch of the Pink October Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in Kumasi on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Ashanti Regional Health Director Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng emphasized the urgent need for increased public awareness and regular medical screenings. He highlighted that early detection is critical for successful treatment and survival.

Dr. Adomako-Boateng also called on the media to actively support education campaigns, stressing that raising awareness is a powerful tool in the fight against breast cancer. “Timely detection saves lives,” he stated.
