The Minority in Parliament has called on government to investigate the content of a leaked tape purported to be plotting the ousting of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

Portions of an audio purported to be a conversation between a senior member of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) and a police commissioner were leaked to the public.

The unidentified persons were allegedly plotting to remove the current IGP from office ahead of the 2024 elections due to his reluctance to align the police force’s activities with the interests of the ruling party.

They also expressed reservations about his leadership style and rumoured ties to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In an urgent statement posed by the Deputy Minority leader and MP for Ellembele constituency Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah he stated that, the minister of interior should investigate the said audio because it is a threat to the safety our election.

Parliament’s Ranking Member on the Defense and Interior Committee, James Agalga, said such comments constitute treason and require the government to take immediate action to address the issue.

Mr Agalga also urged the interior minister to investigate the matter immediately and bring those responsible to justice rather than simply refuting the claim.

Meanwhile, the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has denied reports that there is a scheme to oust the IGP.

Addressing the media in Accra on Tuesday, July 11, Mr Dery said that no bigwig in the government is making any plot to remove Dr Dampare as widely circulated.

“There is no plot to remove anybody. I can assure you that I serve a president who is committed and has respect for human rights. Under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, we will make sure that 2024 is peaceful.

“One thing to be sure, 2024 will not be a violent election by anybody, and no one will want to thwart the will of the people. If you vote us in, you vote us in; if you vote us out, you vote us out,” he said.
