The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has successfully registered a total of 182,831 voters during the initial six days of the limited voter registration exercise. This significant update was shared by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, during a press briefing held in Accra under the banner, “Let the Citizen Know.”

The ongoing limited voter registration exercise, which commenced on September 12, 2023, has seen impressive participation across various regions of Ghana. The statistics unveiled by Mrs. Jean Mensa reflected a substantial turnout, with detailed numbers recorded for each region.

In her address, Mrs Mensa disclosed, “At the end of six days, we have recorded a total of 182,831 registered voters. Western region recorded 11,644, representing 6.4% of persons registered; Western North registered 6,491, constituting 3.6%; Central region recorded 17,590, accounting for 9.6%; Greater Accra region has registered 27,264, representing 14.9%; Volta region registered 12,681, making up 6.9%.”

The Chairperson continued, “Oti region registered 4,427, constituting 2.4%; Eastern region recorded 19,327, representing 10.6%; Ashanti region registered 29,255, accounting for 16%, Bono region registered 6,580, making up 3.6%; Ahafo region registered 4,244, accounting for 2.3%; Upper East registered 8,639, making up 4.7%, and Upper West region registered 5,241, constituting 2.9%.”

Mrs Mensa also shared demographic data, revealing that the registered voters consisted of 53.9% males and 46.1% females.

The Limited Voters’ Registration Exercise is a vital part of the EC’s preparations for the upcoming 2024 general elections, scheduled to take place next year. This exercise is open to all eligible Ghanaians who have reached the age of 18 and above. It began on September 12, 2023, and will continue until October 2, 2023.

This registration drive aims to accommodate Ghanaians who turned 18 after the last registration in 2020 and those who, for various reasons, were unable to register during the 2020 exercise. The EC has made extensive efforts to ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to be enrolled on the electoral register, further enhancing the democratic process in Ghana.
