Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has condemned the remand of democracy hub protesters as, “High-handedness!”.

In a Facebook post on Thursday 26th September, 2024, Mr. Mahama stated that, there is the need to “balance our need to maintain law and order with protecting the rights and freedoms of our citizens. “

The NDC Presidential Candidate described the two week remand by the circuit court as an abuse of right.

“Remanding Democracy Hub demonstrators for 2 weeks is high-handed and an abuse of their rights”, the post read.

“The youth of Ghana have a right to engage in manifestations to protect their future especially in respect of key issues like the destruction of the environment through illegal mining. “

He expressed concern on the decision by the court as “Draconian judicial decisions”, requesting authorities to review their decision by and grant the protesters bail immediately.

High-handedness!
We must balance our need to maintain law and order with protecting the rights and freedoms of our citizens.

Remanding Democracy Hub demonstrators for 2 weeks is high-handed and an abuse of their rights.

The youth of Ghana have a right to engage in manifestations to protect their future especially in respect of key issues like the destruction of the environment through illegal mining.

Draconian judicial decisions such as this won’t stop them from speaking out. The authorities must request the judge to review the remand decision and grant them bail immediately.
