President John Dramani Mahama has launched a Children’s Support Fund to provide for the children of the victims of the August 6 helicopter crash.

Speaking at the state funeral for the victims on Friday, August 15, the President announced that Stanbic Bank has contributed an initial seed capital of 500,000 cedis to start the fund.

He promised the fund will cover the children’s education from primary school through to university, and vowed to sustain it with annual public reports and open channels for contributions from Ghanaians and international partners.

President Mahama praised Stanbic Bank for its swift support and paid tribute to the deceased, calling the crash a national tragedy that “has cast its shadow over the heart of Ghana.”

Two of the victims, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed , were buried on August 10.

The remaining six , Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah were laid to rest today.
