President John Mahama has promised to refund academic fees for all first-year tertiary students who enroll in September 2025.
He made the announcement on Sunday, July 20, during his “Thank You Tour” in Koforidua, Eastern Region, where he addressed a large crowd of cheering supporters at Jackson Park.
Mahama said the government had already secured funds to implement the refund, stressing that the initiative aims to ease the financial burden on students and their families.
“In September, the new batch of first-year students who will be enrolled, money is ready to be reimbursed for their academic fees,” he declared, drawing loud applause.
The fee refund forms part of the government’s flagship ‘No Fees Stress’ policy — a program designed to remove financial barriers to tertiary education, especially for students from disadvantaged communities.
The President also announced that his government had cleared six months of unpaid allowances owed to students in nursing and teacher training colleges.
“We have paid six months’ arrears of allowances for nursing and teacher trainees,” he said. “We promise to continue paying their allowances every month.”
The fee reimbursement and allowance payments form part of Mahama’s broader agenda to promote social protection and invest in human capital.
