President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to uphold the true essence of democracy, emphasizing accountability, economic growth, and national development.

Addressing the nation on the 68th Independence Day celebration, he reflected on Ghana’s journey, acknowledging both moments of triumph and challenges that have shaped the nation’s democratic evolution.

“We have now blossomed into a fully fledged democracy with a healthy culture of peaceful power transfers,” he said.

However, he reminded citizens that democracy is not just about voting, but about holding leaders accountable and safeguarding the freedoms and rights of the people.

President Mahama paid tribute to the resilience of the Ghanaian people, stating that despite historical struggles and changing times, the nation’s democratic spirit remains unbroken.

“But through it all one truth stands firm the unbreakable will of the Ghanaian people has ensured that no matter the twists and turns, our democratic spirit endures and our destiny remains in our own hands,” he affirmed.

He urged the nation to reflect on its progress and critically assess key sectors such as the economy, education, human resource development, natural resource management, and national security and governance arrangements.

“We must conduct a thorough review of our healthcare system, agriculture and food security, infrastructure, and urban development,” he emphasized, adding that science, technology, and innovation must play a crucial role in Ghana’s future.

In light of global environmental concerns, President Mahama highlighted the importance of balancing economic growth with sustainability. “In this era of green transition, we must recognize our unique circumstance a nation rich in natural resources, yet vulnerable to climate change.”

He called for strategic policies that ensure responsible resource management while promoting economic prosperity.
