The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has expressed support for the concerns raised by his party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, regarding the signing of peace pacts ahead of elections. Mahama justified Asiedu Nketia’s reservations, indicating that the concerns are valid and worthy of consideration.

In a media interview on Wednesday, August 14, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the NDC’s National Chairman, voiced his doubts about the impact of peace agreements, citing previous experiences. He implied that the NDC is unlikely to commit to signing the pact this year, signaling a cautious approach to such agreements.

In response to the NDC’s concerns, the National Peace Council has acknowledged their reservations and committed to engaging with the party to address their worries. Meanwhile, the governing party has denounced the NDC’s stance, criticizing their decision.

At a press briefing in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, on Friday, August 16, John Mahama provided clarification on the NDC’s stance regarding the peace pact. The former President emphasized that the party has not made a definitive decision to decline signing the agreement.

He stressed that instead of merely signing a pact, it is crucial for stakeholders to concentrate on establishing the fundamental elements necessary for achieving lasting peace.
