ORAL is an instrument assisting in the fight against corruption- Mahama

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called on all Ghanaians to actively take part in a nationwide demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC) this Tuesday.

Expressing his concerns, Mr. Mahama criticized the recent behavior of EC Commissioners, highlighting that their remarks do not reflect the impartiality expected of an institution overseeing the upcoming December 7 elections.

Speaking at a durbar in Amanfrom in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, the Mr. Mahama stressed the need to resolve the irregularities in the voters’ register, insisting that the EC has no choice but to act.

He warned that the EC appears to have an agenda, which, if not addressed, could have severe consequences for the peace and security of the nation.

He emphasized that applying pressure through nationwide demonstrations is the only way to compel the EC to address these concerns. He urged all Ghanaians, not just NDC supporters to join the protests.

The former President also condemned the EC’s false claim that the voter register has not undergone any audits since 1992.

Mr. Mahama questioned why an independent audit, which took just two weeks to clean the register in 2016, when he was President cannot be done now.

The NDC has flagged issues such as illegal voter transfers and unapproved changes to polling stations, leading them to view the demonstration as their only option. They had earlier demanded a live broadcast of the EC’s findings after reviewing the recently exhibited provisional register, but the request was denied.

Citing the latest Afrobarometer report, Mahama noted that while 54% of Ghanaians still trust the EC, the Commission must take further steps to restore its fast-diminishing credibility. He recalled that during his presidency, the EC was compelled to allow an audit of the register, questioning why similar steps cannot be taken today.
