President John Dramani Mahama has visited the 37 Military Hospital in Accra following Wednesday’s tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise, which left six people dead and several others injured.

Accompanied by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, Acting Defence Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, and other senior officials, President Mahama who also serves as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces met with hospital authorities to receive updates on the condition of the victims.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, 28 applicants were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital after the incident. Six were confirmed dead on arrival, while five remain in intensive care and 12 are in critical condition.

Preliminary information indicates that most of the deceased are women. GAF said the tragedy occurred around 6:20 a.m. when an unexpected surge of applicants breached security barriers and forced their way through the gates before the scheduled screening time.

In a statement, the Armed Forces expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
