A coalition of Constituency Secretaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have appealed to the government to position them as District Directors of the National Identification Authority (NIA).
The National Identification Authority (NIA), to extend its mandate across the country, is readying itself to set up offices in all of Ghana’s districts.
The Brekum East Constituency Secretary, Harrison Asamoah speaking on behalf of the Coalition posited they are the right people for the position because “we know the people in the constituency on a one-on-one basis”.
“Looking at the work of the Constituency Secretary, we are always in touch with the people in the community and we believe positioning us as directors will make the work of the NIA at the district level seamless”, he defended reasons for the demand.
He made their position known in an interview with Happy 98.9 FM’s Don Kwabena Prah on the Epa Hoa Daben political talk show.
According to Harrison, the demand is not a “blanket one” as he motioned only qualified persons from the group should be honored with the position.
“We are not saying all the secretaries should be given the post but qualifications must be verified and anyone interested must be fit for the role. With the knowledge and experience we have, we can do the work. We know we can do the work very well and that is why we need to do it. We have the academic experience, professionalism and the right socialization”, he assured.
He described the demand as one in the interest of the country and nothing else.
During the mass registration exercise for the National ID last year, some Ghanaians were unable partake in it because they did not have the required documents to get registered. But these Constituency Secretaries believe these inconveniences will be resolved with them in the District Director positions.
