The Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has expressed profound appreciation to the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, for suspending the enforcement of licensing requirements for courier and delivery riders.

In a statement posted on his facebook page on Friday, August 22, Mr. Basintale said he was grateful to the Minister for immediately directing the halt of the arrest of courier and delivery riders around the country.

He noted that the Minister’s directive for broader engagement with the leadership of the riders and the proposal of reforms to regulate their operations was a step in the right direction.

“I’m grateful to the minister responsible for communication Sam Dzata George for immediately directing the halt of the arrest of courier and delivery riders around the country. He has directed an engagement with the leadership of these riders and has proposed better reforms that will further guide their actions,” he stated.

His comments follow Thursday’s suspension of an enforcement exercise by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC) and the Ghana Police, which had required riders to obtain a GH¢1,000 courier licence per motorbike.

The directive sparked protests from the Concerned Delivery Riders Association, who described the policy as unfair and unnecessary.
