The Kpando Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in the Volta Region, Mr. Killian Donkor, has spearheaded the clearance of decades-old refuse dumps in parts of the municipality as part of efforts to improve sanitation and protect public health.
The exercise, which commenced earlier this week, saw the removal of long-abandoned waste sites at Gabi Agorneme, Kudzra, and Gbefi.
Some of the dumps had been left unattended for over 30 years, becoming breeding grounds for diseases and sources of environmental pollution.
In an interview with the media, Mr. Donkor stated that the initiative formed part of the Assembly’s broader sanitation improvement programme aimed at restoring environmental cleanliness and enhancing the municipality’s image.
The MCE assured that the Assembly would sustain the initiative to ensure a cleaner and healthier municipality.
Some of the residents commended the MCE and the Assembly for their commitment to improving living conditions.
They expressed relief over the development, noting that the refuse piles had posed serious health risks, especially during the rainy season when stagnant water and decomposing waste contributed to cholera outbreaks and other sanitation-related diseases.
