The Minority in Parliament is criticizing the Majority for fast-tracking the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill 2025, accusing them of ignoring more urgent national concerns.
Parliament passed the bill this week, introducing key changes to Ghana’s holiday calendar. The new law restores July 1 as Republic Day and September 21 as Founders’ Day. It also gives the President the power to shift holidays that fall midweek—on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays—to the nearest Friday or Monday.
But, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is not happy. He says the Majority rushed the bill through under a certificate of urgency, a move he believes sidesteps more pressing issues affecting Ghanaians.
Opposition MPs say Parliament should be focusing on critical matters like the economy, unemployment, and security—not holidays.
