The Minority in Parliament has called for the suspension of the approval process for Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination as Chief Justice, citing ongoing court cases challenging the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
According to the Minority, proceeding with the approval at this stage would breach the sub judice rule, undermine judicial independence, and risk creating conflicting claims to the office of Chief Justice.
They revealed that there are currently seven active cases before the ECOWAS Court, the Supreme Court, and the High Court, all contesting the legality of Justice Torkornoo’s removal.
The Minority further expressed concern about a potential conflict of interest, noting that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie had previously ruled on injunction applications connected to the matter.
They urged Parliament to defer consideration of the nomination until all related judicial proceedings are concluded, in order to protect constitutional integrity, maintain parliamentary precedent, and uphold the separation of powers.
