President Akufo-Addo will today commission the Indigenous Gas for the multi-million dollar Karpowership in Sekondi.

Briefing the media ahead of the Commissioning in Takoradi head of communications for Ghana Gas Ernest Owusu Bempah said the oncoming of Karpower reduces the cost of producing power and is saving Ghana 40 millions of cedis monthly from buying heavy fuel oil.

The Ghana Gas – Karpowership interconnection project, owing to some risk, and workplace safety and health management system, project managers adopted and recorded no incidence, this is an outstanding feat chalked by the local engineers who executed the project, and most importantly, being completed within schedule [31 October 2019].
Mr Owusu Bempah mentioned with some satisfaction the quality of work adding “not a single power interruption was experienced during the project”

“…Taking the gas from Takoradi Regulating and Metering Station (TRMS), and pushing the gas to the Onshore Terminal Station (OTS), fro there to the Karpowership where the pipelines were out on the sea bed to link to the Karpowership without any shut down, without any interruption in our power supply. It is very key and professionally done” he emphasized.

Currently, an average of 30 million standard cubic feet of gas is being pushed through pressure pipes from the OTS at Essipong to the powership for energy generation.

Manager in-charge of Pipelines and Stations, Emmanuel Oneistmous Ackon says the company is ever ready to increase supply anytime as demanded by GRIDCO, Aboadze of Karpowership, to be fed into the national grid. He noted that the OTS has the capacity to supply about 90 million standard cubic feet of gas to the Karpowership for energy generation.

Background

The government took a firm decision to move the 470 magwatts Karpowership to Sekondi Naval Base to enable operations to draw natural gas from Atuabo Ghana Gas plant to power the Karpowership.
The 470-megawatts (MW) Karadeniz Powership arrived at the anchorage of the Home Port of the Western Naval Command, Sekondi in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis on Thursday 15th August.
