The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused Brigadier General Michael Opoku of training NPP vigilantes at the Asutsuare military training grounds, allegedly preparing them to instigate violence during and after the December 2024 elections.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at the party’s headquarters in Accra, NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi claimed that Brigadier General Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, has been tasked by President Akufo-Addo to rig the elections in favor of the NPP, he alleged that the training at Asutsuare is part of this agenda.

He further accused Brigadier General Opoku of stockpiling military uniforms, equipment, pink sheets, ballot boxes, and ballot papers at his residence in Kumasi. According to Gyamfi, these materials are intended to facilitate vote manipulation on December 7 by swapping genuine ballots with fraudulent ones.

Sammy Gyamfi commended the NDC’s security team for uncovering these alleged plans and assured the public that the party would take all necessary measures to prevent them. He also claimed that Brigadier General Opoku had relocated his wife and children abroad as part of his preparations and has been promised the position of Chief of Defence Staff if his operations succeed.

Gyamfi called on the Inspector General of Police and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene by summoning Brigadier General Michael Opoku for questioning ahead of the December 2 special voting and December 7 general elections.
