NDC collateralizes road fund for 1.2 billion UBA loan- MP

The chairman of the Parliamentary Select on Roads and Transport, Samuel Aye paye has descended heavily on the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for collateralizing the proceeds of the Road Fund for a 1.2 billion Ghana Cedis loan from the United Bank for Africa (UBA).
According to him, if it had not been the ingenuity of the Minister for Roads and Highway, Mr. Amoako Atta, there would not have been any road maintenance project across the country this year.
He said this is so, because there is no money for the maintenance of the roads that have deteriorated in the country.
He commended the sector minister for marshaling the needed forces to have some the collapsed bridges and roads maintained in the country.
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayensuano in the Eastern Region said the NDC defaulted in the payment of the loan from the bank and the interest on the loan has accrued to the tune over two billion Ghana Cedis.
He explained that this has led to the management of the bank to put a lien on the Road Fund secretariat inhibiting the government from fully accessing the funds.
Mr. Ayepaye made this disclosure on Accra- based Okay FM morning show hosted Mr. NkrumahTikease.
He said the NDC has run the coffers of the road fund to down and there is no money to pay contractors who have done genuine work in the country.
He gave the assurance the Ministry is working collaboration some other banks to raise some moneys for the payment of some of these contractors across the country.
He explained that contractors who were given genuine contracts and did genuine jobs will be fully paid their due.
He noted that the government in collaboration with the management COCOBOD has begun the audit of all the Cocoa road contracts awarded by the NDC’s administration.
He said so far the audit committee has completed work in two regions namely Brong Ahafo and Western regions and their findings will be made available to the Special Prosecutor office for the needed action to be taken.
He said over two hundred contracts were awarded in the two regions over thirty-two of these contracts cannot be accounted for.
