The Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has warned healthcare providers against charging illegal fees for services covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Describing the practice as “absolutely unacceptable,” Dr. Bampoe said facilities found guilty risk losing their NHIA credentials.
“It is not fair to Ghanaians for some health facilities to take money from patients and still submit claims to us,” he stated.
He assured that NHIA is reimbursing providers promptly, with GH₵1.6 billion in claims paid since he took office, thanks to President John Mahama’s decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Fund, boosting resources by 30%.
Dr. Bampoe also highlighted the NHIS’s impact during a nationwide tour, noting benefits for pregnant women, children, and the elderly.
He reaffirmed NHIA’s commitment to enforcing rules and maintaining public trust in the scheme.
