The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that it will begin registering children between the ages of 6 and 14 in September.

This initiative aims to include young Ghanaians in the national identification system, ensuring they receive their Ghana Cards, which will serve as official identity documents.

This follows the successful registration of 18 million Ghanaians aged 15 and above, the NIA is now set to extend the process to younger citizens.

According to Executive Secretary Professor Ken Attafuah, the initiative has already been piloted in the Eastern and Central regions and is now ready for a nationwide implementation.

“We have started looking at Ghanaians aged between 6 and 14 years because the mass registration and the continuous registration captured Ghanaians 15 years and above.

“We are now turning our attention to those below the age of 16 and between July 20 and July 23, and we piloted the registration of this cohort of the population in the Eastern region and the Central region and based on that, we have learned some lessons and we are retooling our mechanism to begin the registration of this class of people” he added.

The upcoming registration process is part of the NIA’s ongoing efforts to expand its coverage and ensure that every Ghanaian is registered. By targeting this younger age group, the authority seeks to enhance the inclusivity and accuracy of the national database.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to prepare for the registration exercise, which will require basic identification documents and personal details of the children.

The NIA believes that integrating younger citizens into the national ID system will help streamline access to essential services and support long-term national development goals.
