The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expelled four of its prominent members for openly campaigning in favour of presidential aspirant Alan Kyerematen, contrary to the party’s elected flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The ousted members include Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Nana Ohene Ntow, Hopeson Adorye, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique, whose memberships were officially revoked in a press release issued on Monday, November 20.

The decision was based on their public endorsement of a candidate other than the party’s chosen leader, a move deemed a breach of the party’s constitution.

The press release, signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, cited violations of specific articles, namely 3(5)(A)(4) and 3(9)(1) of the party’s constitution. These articles emphasize members’ obligations to abide by and publicly support the decisions of the party, a commitment the expelled members were found to have disregarded.

The statement expressed the party’s awareness of the activities of the four individuals and emphasized their persistent association with the NPP despite the breach of constitutional guidelines. It was clarified that such actions ran counter to the principles of the party, leading to the decision to forfeit their membership.

“The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken notice of recent activities of Hopeson Adorye, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique, which includes publicly endorsing the candidature of a person other than the duly elected Presidential Candidate of the Party; Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia,” the statement read.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Article 3(5)(A)(4) of the NPP Constitution enjoins all members of the Party to ‘abide by and publicly uphold the decisions of the Party,'” it added.

This unexpected move by the NPP leadership underscores the party’s commitment to internal discipline and adherence to its constitutional provisions, even at the expense of losing influential members. The expulsion sends a strong message about the party’s unity and the importance of respecting internal decisions, especially during crucial election periods.
