NPP has a united party tradition – Kwabena Agyepong

Recognized political figure in the history of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, says the party was built by a number of people as against the notable three (3) constantly being highlighted.

According to him, the party has a united tradition and not a tradition based on the three (3).

“It is not true when we hear people say the tradition of the NPP is based on 3 people. We need to revise this notion. The NPP has a united party tradition. There were a lot of other people involved in the formation of the NPP. The NPP is a national party with a united tradition and we need to stop talking about the triangle,” he told Don Kwabena Prah on Happy98.9FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political talk show.

Reiterating the NPP as a united one with no factions, he charged party faithful to enhance “the things which bring us together as a country rather than focus on what pulls us apart.”

The Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition is the oldest surviving political tradition in Ghana that dates as far back as 1947, before Ghana attained independence. The main political figures this tradition stems from are Dr. JB Danquah (founder of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC)), Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia and Simon Diedong Dombo

Although this tradidion dates as far back as 1947, it came to the limelight in 1957 after series of events that led to the merger of the then opposition parties to form the United Party (UP) due to the passage of the Avoidance of Discrimination Act (ADA) that banned all political parties that were formed along tribal, regional and religious lines under the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

This tradition remains the cornerstone of the current New Patriotic Party.
