NPP rejects EC’s decision to rerun Ablekuma North’s election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has publicly rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) assertion that there was party consensus ahead of a decision to rerun the December 2024 parliamentary election in the constituency.

The Electoral Commission in a statement released on July 2, announced that it would conduct a rerun in 19 polling stations, citing unresolved questions around the credibility of pink sheet documentation and concerns raised during the collation process.

The Commission also claimed the decision followed “extensive consultations” with political stakeholders.

However, at a press briefing held on July 3, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, refuted the EC’s version of events.

“At the meeting with the EC on July 1, our representatives, Director of Elections Evans Nimako and former MP Ebenezer Nartey, vehemently opposed the proposed rerun. It is therefore misleading for the EC to suggest that consensus was reached.”

He described the EC’s announcement as an “administrative overreach” and hinted that the party is weighing its legal options to challenge the move.

The rerun, scheduled for Friday, July 11, could tip the balance in one of Greater Accra’s most hotly contested parliamentary seats. Both the NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie and the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn have previously declared victory, heightening tensions in the constituency.
