NSA boss Professor Peter Twumasi proposes fund to maintain Sports facilities

The National Sports Authority (NSA) boss, Professor Peter Twumasi, is proposing that a fund should be set up purposely for the renovation of the various stadia across the nation.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is embarking on a project to renovate the Baba Yara and the Essipong Sports Stadiums. The four stadia since their establishment in 2008 has not seen any major renovation works, with some of them in deplorable states.

The Accra Sports Stadium is the only stadium to be recently renovated to host the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations. The other venues have been closed down for works to be carried out.

Due to insufficient funds from the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi has proposed an idea that a fund should be set up to be used for the maintenance of the facilities.

He explained that it will be prudent to carry out major renovation works at the various facilities every five years.

Speaking in an interview on Happy 98.9FM on Happy Sports, with Ohene-Bampoe Brenay, he said, “we will make sure the maintenance plans will be followed in all the facilities. We must set up a fund to ensure that maintenance works can be done every 5 years”.

He stated that it’s difficult to obtain funds to maintain the facilities since the NSA does not charge commercial rate for usage of the facility.

“It is difficult to charge commercial rate in order to get money to maintain the stadium”.

Renovation works are currently ongoing at the Baba Yara and Essipong Sports Stadiums.
