The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the closure of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region after a male student was tragically shot and killed in his classroom during mock examinations.
Accoridng to a statement by the GES, decision, follows a disturbing escalation in tribal violence in the area that has left students fearing for their lives.
The Acting Regional Director of Education cited the deteriorating security situation and the need to “safeguard the lives of students and staff.”
On the morning of Thursday, June 26, two female day students were struck by gunfire while en route to school, sustaining injuries that sent shockwaves through the community.
Just a day later, during mock examinations on Friday, June 27, a male student sitting in his classroom was fatally hit by a stray bullet.
The incident has sparked outrage and grief nationwide.
Eight suspects have since been arrested in connection with the violent outbreaks, though the motive remains under investigation, preliminary reports suggest tribal tensions may have fueled the unrest.
Deputy Superintendent of Police John Nchor, Public Affairs Officer of the Oti Regional Police Command, assured the public that calm has been restored.
He confirmed that a robust security strategy has been implemented in and around Nkwanta, including intensified patrols and newly established checkpoints.
“As I am talking, calm has been restored… swift and decisive actions have been taken to maintain law and order,”.
