The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has dismissed reports suggesting that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) cleared former Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah of corruption allegations.
In a statement, the OSP described such reports as inaccurate and a mischievous misrepresentation of its half-yearly report. According to the office, while its investigations alongside aspects conducted by the FBI at the OSP’s request did not find direct and immediate evidence of corruption, this cannot be interpreted as a blanket clearance.
“The report clearly indicated that no direct and immediate evidence of corruption was found, a carefully defined legal standard that is materially different from the blanket phrases such as ‘no evidence’ and ‘has been cleared,’” the OSP explained.
The OSP further disclosed that the case had been referred to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) under its previous leadership due to strong indications of suspected money laundering and structuring, which fall under EOCO’s mandate. However, the earlier leadership of EOCO did not act and returned the docket. The new EOCO leadership has since requested and received the docket again.
The OSP urged media houses to exercise precision and rely on official documents in their reporting to ensure accurate, fair, and responsible communication on issues of national interest.
