The Ghana Water Company Limited Communication Manager for Western and Central Regions , Nana Yaw Barima Barnie has expressed strong disapproval of galamsey operators subjecting GWCL staff working at the treatment Plant on the Pra River to serious beatings and intimidation.

According to him, the galamsey operators are of the belief that it is the staff of GWCL who report them to authorities to be pursued since the government has declared a fight against their operations.

In an interview with Kwadwo Sefah-Danquah on Happy 98.9 FM’s, the manager said galamsey activities on the Pra River have resulted in inadequate water supply in some Parts of the Central Region which has become a serious concern now.

He added the plant is able to produce a quarter of it’s installed capacity as a result of galamsey activities.

They also spent a lot money to maintain the pipes and equipment that aid the distribution of water to households.

“The fight against illegal mining is not something that GWCL can pursue but our duty is to educate the public to help combat galamsey activities in the region that had lead to inadequate supply of Water”.

He called on government to help combat the menace of galamsey activities on the Pra River and other parts of the country.
