This year, 2023, will mark thirty years of continuous parliamentary democracy in Ghana’s Parliament.

Under the direction of Speaker of the Eighth Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, , several events have been planned throughout the year to markthe occasion.

This information was provided in a press statement sent to the Ghana News Agency by Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah, Director, Coordinator of the 30™ Anniversary Celebrations Committee.

“These activities will be celebrated in four regional zones, beginning with the Northern Zone namely Wa,Tamale and Bolgatanga, and will include Mock Parliament, Public Forum and Peace Walk,” it said.

A television broadcast will showcase the parliamentary journey thus far, with particular emphasis on the pivotal role and significant contributions of women in the history of Parliament.

The activities, it said would foster civic engagement and enhance public awareness of parliamentary democracy.

The commemoration, under the theme “Thirty years of parliamentary democracy under the Fourth Republic: The Journey thus far,” will give members of Parliament and Ghanaians the chance to look at the accomplishments of the legislature, acknowledge its setbacks, and reaffirm their commitment to the democratic, just, and equality principles that have guided the country over the years.

Three major events, including a Mock Parliament in Wa in the Upper West Region on June 15, 2023, at the Regional Library Complex, will serve as the opening ceremonies for the festivities.

Five tertiary institutions from the northern zone would participate in the mock parliament, according to the announcement.
On Friday, June 16, 2023, a public forum will also be held at the University of Development Studies (UDS) campus in Tamale, in the Northern Region.

The next day at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, sporting events will also be held as part of the festivities’ culmination followed by a peace walk.

The release noted that the Bolgatanga Regional Coordinating Council would serve as the event’s focal centre.

The 30th anniversary of Ghana’s parliamentary democracy is an important turning point for the nation and evidence of its dedication to democratic administration.
