Plot to oust IGP: Leaked tape has been a blessing -Retired COP Alex Mensah

Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex Mensah has openly expressed that the leaked tape scandal, which unveiled an alleged plot to remove the Inspector General of Police, COP George Akuffo Dampare, has been a blessing to him.

Contrary to expectations that the scandal would have been a source of embarrassment for those implicated, COP Alex Mensah believes it has had a positive impact on his life.

The scandal emerged when a leaked tape revealed a conversation between COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare and Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party. In the recording, they discussed various aspects of Dr. Dampare’s administration and suggested that they might not support the governing party if he remained in office until the 2024 elections.

COP Alex Mensah recently appeared before a parliamentary committee tasked with investigating the contents of the leaked tape. During his appearance, he made further claims about the IGP, describing him as the worst IGP in the history of the service.

While the parliamentary committee is yet to submit its final report after interrogating the involved parties, COP Alex Mensah seems unfazed by the situation.

In an interview on Joy News, he shared his perspective on the situation, describing it as a blessing. When asked if he had any regrets about the scandal, he responded, “No, never. You see, God has His own way of blessing people. Had it not been for this tape, maybe we wouldn’t have been here. My name and my picture wouldn’t have been where it is circulating now. Now, if you go to my constituency, everybody knows me. Everybody is looking for me.”

The scandal has brought him renewed attention, with friends he had not heard from in years reaching out from the U.S., U.K., and Germany.

He views the situation as a divine intervention, stating, “God has His own way of bringing up somebody. Sometimes you will not understand, but at the end of the day, you will understand and say, I thought this was a problem, but that was the way the Lord is using to bring you up.”

When asked directly if the scandal had been a blessing to him, he affirmed, “It has been so many ways. At least now, it has made the public aware that something is not going well in the Ghana Police Service.”

COP Alex Mensah, who is also an aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Bekwai Constituency, insisted that the entire issue had been blown out of proportion.

He maintained that the conversation was private and emphasised that the focus should be on identifying the individual responsible for leaking the conversation rather than on those engaged in a normal discussion.

He further asserted that the tape was doctored to serve a malicious agenda and that he had not said anything wrong or engaged in any illicit activities during the recorded conversation. He expressed his willingness to stand by his words before the committee and in any other forum.
