Three Chinese nationals face prosecution after authorities busted them for illegal mining at Akyem Abaam, near Akyem Kade in the Eastern Region. Two excavators used in the activity are now in the custody of the Kwaebibirem Municipal Assembly.
The Kwaebibirem Municipal Chief Executive, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, says the Kade police, led by District Commander ASP Barlekor Bernard, acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off about illegal mining along the Birim River.
He explained that when the police stormed the site, they caught three Chinese nationals in action. Other local accomplices fled the scene, leaving behind two excavators.
According to Mr. Nti, the police have handed the suspects to the Eastern Regional National Security for prosecution, while the seized machines remain parked at the Municipal Assembly yard.
He warned that the assembly will show no mercy to anyone who continues to engage in galamsey within the municipality.
