The Accra Regional Police Command has assured residents and visitors of robust security as preparations for the 2025 Homowo Festival gather momentum. The police say they have instituted a number of measures aimed at preserving peace and cultural pride throughout the festivities.
At a media briefing held on Monday, July 7, Superintendent of Police, Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Command, revealed the establishment of a specialised security team made up of police personnel and representatives from the traditional council who will ensure peace prevails during the festivities.
This joint effort is designed to ensure seamless coordination and prevent any disturbances before, during, and after the event.
“We are very much aware of the Homowo Festival that has almost started and can assure the general public that there will be adequate security for the celebration,” Superintendent Obeng said.
Homowo, meaning “hooting at hunger,” is a centuries-old harvest festival celebrated by the Ga people. It draws thousands of celebrants to the streets of Accra each year with vibrant traditional music, sacred rituals, and the sprinkling of kpokpoi, a special festival dish.
Supt. Obeng appealed to community members to support the police in maintaining order, noting the crucial role of local cooperation in ensuring safety.
“We would want the indigenes to know that we are here to protect them and so we would need their cooperation and support”.
The police have also activated emergency hotlines and increased patrols across major areas within the capital, especially locations earmarked for key festival events.
While the police have acknowledged the cultural significance of traditional musketry during Homowo, they warned against the use of live ammunition.
Supt. Obeng indicated that a joint task force would be on high alert to enforce this directive.
“The safety of participants is paramount. Any individual found engaging in the use of live ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” she stressed.
As August 16 approaches, the peak day of Homowo activities residents are urged to remain vigilant, obey safety protocols, and report any suspicious behavior to security authorities.
