The legal team representing the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has returned to the Accra High court today, December 8, to file a motion compelling state prosecutors to release key documents in his ongoing illegal mining case.
According to the defence, the prosecution has failed to comply with mandatory disclosure requirements, a situation they say could hinder the fair conduct of the trial.
Speaking to the media ahead of the court proceedings, lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi expressed concern over the delay, indicating that the defence has been waiting for crucial documents necessary to prepare their case.
“It appears things are moving smoothly, but we are still waiting for the prosecution to produce certain documents. If they do not have them, they are required to formally inform the court,” he stated.
The motion being filed today seeks a court order directing the prosecution to release the outstanding documents or officially declare their unavailability.
Chairman Wontumi is facing charges related to alleged illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey. Further proceedings are expected once the court determines the disclosure application.
