2026 Glasgow: Sports Fund to Boost Technical Support for Black Bombers – Dr Wuaku

Ghana Sports Fund Administrator Dr. David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku has pledged to channel resources into closing technical gaps in the country’s boxing programme.

This follows a meeting with the Black Bombers and Black Hitters in Glasgow to hear directly about the challenges of their 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign.

Wuaku told the boxers that their own resolve would ultimately determine how far they went, no matter what institutional backing was put behind them.

“If you don’t make that decision, irrespective of whatever support your coaches, the executives, the NSA, or sports fans give you, we will just be wasting our time,” he said.
“But when you decide, ‘I am going to be the next world-class boxer for Ghana,’ all that we are saying here today will be seen in the shortest possible time.”

He pointed to Ghana’s boxing history as evidence of what is possible, invoking the legacy of Azumah Nelson.
“Today, we call Azumah Nelson. The benefit, the big one, goes to him. He earned it, his family enjoyed it, the boxing arena and fraternity enjoy it, and the country is known in many places because of Azumah Nelson,” he said, urging the current crop of boxers to build a legacy of their own.

Wuaku said a technical assessment of the team had already begun, carried out by a member of the Fund’s governing board during her time observing the boxers in Glasgow.
“One of our board members has been here and has watched many of you. She is a very technical person in sport, and she gave me an account of things. What she mentioned largely was about technical bits that need to be added to your talent,” he said.

He said the Fund would follow up once the team returned home.
“When we get back to Ghana, we are going to meet with your coaches and the executives, and see how best we can help, so that everybody’s effort might be seen, and Ghana will grow and develop in sport,” Wuaku said.

The visit forms part of a broader effort by the Fund, established under the Ghana Sports Fund Act to overhaul the financing of sports development in the country. The goal is to engage directly with national teams rather than relying on reports filtered through federations.
