The Member of Parliament for Akuapem South and Deputy Minister for Local Government, Hon. Osei Bonsu Amoah has said that District Chief Executives (DCEs) standing on the tickets of political parties for local Government will in no way repress progress in the district assemblies.

He was speaking in an interview with Nana Afrifa Mensah on Happy FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’.

“It has been proposed that the local Government elections should be multiparty. Even though the constitution grants the President the power to appoint DCEs, the referendum is to help Ghanaians decide if elections should be held for the appointment of DCEs”, he said.

According to him, the central Government cannot sideline DCEs from different political parties because provisions have been made to support local Government.

“Our constitution guarantees common fund for all DCEs. District Assemblies can also support themselves with internally generated funds. Finally the national budget supports DCEs”, he added.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana on the 17th of December, 2019 will conduct a referendum to seek Ghanaians’ approval on whether candidates for elections of District Assemblies should be sponsored by political parties.
