President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has challenged John Dramani Mahama, National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, to provide a clear and definitive position on combating illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.

Addressing Chiefs in the North East Region during his ‘thank-you tour’ on Tuesday October 15, Akufo-Addo criticized Mahama’s contradictory statements on galamsey, emphasizing the need for consistency and clarity. He questioned Mahama’s commitment to tackling this pressing environmental issue.

“What are you telling the people of Ghana because every time you speak you speak from one corner of your mouth and you speak from another corner of your mouth, let us hear from you direct and straight up. What do you stand for?”, he questioned

The President advocated for a non-partisan approach, proposing a political pact between parties to address galamsey’s devastating impact on Ghana’s natural resources and livelihoods. Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to combating galamsey, despite potential political repercussions. His administration has faced criticism for its handling of the issue, but Akufo-Addo remains resolute.

The call for clarity comes amidst growing concerns over galamsey’s effects on Ghana’s environment, economy and communities. The government’s efforts to combat illegal mining have yielded mixed results, underscoring the need for sustained action.
