The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, November 17, 2025, following Parliament’s approval of his nomination earlier this month.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was nominated on September 23, 2025, in acknowledgment of his extensive judicial career spanning the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. He had been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, after the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on November 10, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie promised an open-door, consensus-building leadership style, and reiterated his commitment to safeguarding judicial independence and enhancing access to justice.
Parliament endorsed his nomination on November 13 with 163 MPs voting in favour and 69 against, paving the way for Monday’s formal swearing-in.
With his induction now complete, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie fully assumes the mantle of Chief Justice, leading the judiciary and bearing primary responsibility for the protection of the rule of law in Ghana.
