The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has assured officers and men of Ghana’s security services that President John Dramani Mahama is committed to adequately equipping them as the country’s economy continues to stabilise.

He said the government is fully aware of the numerous challenges confronting security personnel, including housing, logistics, allowances and morale, and will address them as economic conditions improve.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak gave the assurance during a debriefing exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra after a joint security services route march through the principal streets of the capital.

According to the Interior Minister, the Acting Minister for Defence, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who also serves as Minister of Finance, is fully briefed on the difficulties facing the security agencies and is working to restore economic stability under the ongoing IMF programme.

“There is not a single challenge you are going through that government is not aware of,” he said, adding that once the economy is fully back on track, security personnel will feel the impact not only in their earnings but also in the equipment they use in the line of duty.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak said the President has already set the tone by improving logistics for the security services, citing recent acquisitions of armoured vehicles for the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.

He disclosed that the Ghana National Fire Service will also be prioritised with the provision of additional fire tenders, while attention will be given to the Ghana Prisons Service, Immigration Service and Customs Division to address the risks and operational challenges associated with their work.

The Interior Minister stressed that the safety of citizens depends on the safety and preparedness of security personnel, noting that officers can only effectively protect the public when they are well equipped, properly housed and adequately supported.

He expressed optimism that by 2026, the security services would face significantly fewer challenges, assuring them of government’s resolve to work tirelessly to improve their working conditions.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak commended the officers for their dedication and sacrifices and prayed for God’s continued protection for them and the nation.
