President John Dramani Mahama has outlined measures to address the issue of overloaded heavy-duty trucks destroying Ghana’s roads.
President Mahama revealed that he has consulted with the Road Minister to implement a new weight law for heavy-duty trucks.
President Mahama noted that trucks supposed to carry 50 tonnes of load are often overloaded with over 120 tonnes, significantly contributing to the deterioration of Ghana’s roads.
He cited the example of Burkina Faso, which has implemented a new weight law that requires trucks exceeding the specified limit to be reloaded or face penalties.
President Mahama announced that Ghana will follow suit after discussions with the drivers’ union and stakeholders. The new law will be implemented in the next budget, aiming to ensure that Ghana’s roads last longer.
He explained that trucks loaded from Takoradi and Tema harbors are now being reloaded at the borders of Burkina Faso due to the new weight law, with three trucks now carrying the load of one truck from Ghana.
