A coalition led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is staging a public protest in Accra, demanding the immediate reinstatement of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, whose suspension by President John Dramani Mahama has sparked widespread political backlash.

According to organizers, the protest aims to defend the independence of the judiciary and condemn what they describe as an unconstitutional and politically motivated decision.

The NPP is joined by several allied political parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP) and People’s National Party (PNP)

In an interview with some protestors, they emphasized that the protest is not politically driven but rather a united call from concerned citizens who support the integrity of the judiciary.

They noted that the demonstration has been peaceful so far, to the extent that police officers present have had little to do.

The protesters criticized President Mahama for what they described as an increasingly autocratic approach, accusing him of ignoring public sentiment. They argued that since the matter is already before the Supreme Court, the President should have awaited a ruling before taking action. Instead, they claim, he has acted as both judge and jury in a case still pending before the court.

They vowed to continue exercising their constitutional rights as responsible citizens to safeguard the independence of the judiciary.
