The Member of Parliament (MP) of Kumbungu in the Northern Region of Ghana, Ras Mubarak has claimed that Sammy Gyamfi was arrested under what he calls colonial laws in the country.

According to the MP, Sammy Gyamfi was arrested amidst allegations of making publications that caused fear and alarm on social media and does not merit an arrest. “The charge is that, he made statement about a presidential staffer on Facebook. Cases such as this are civil cases and not criminal”

Speaking in an interview on Happy Fm’s Epa Hoa Daben, the politician opined that, this is a strategy the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is using to intimidate the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He said, “These are some of the intimidation tactics we will experience as we prepare towards elections. But we are very focused on our activities for election 2020.”

He also added that, the government was taking advantage of the security forces at its disposal to harass citizens and decrease the NDC’s resolve. “Sammy denies saying anything to warrant the treatment he received earlier today. We do not know why he is being harassed this way. The government is trying to use the forces at its disposal to harass and weaken our resolve,” he stated.

The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Sammy Gyamfi who was picked up by the police this morning has been granted bail. Conditions for his bail included him handing over his phone and reporting himself to the cyber-crimes unit of the Ghana Police every Monday.
