The Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awurbe together with a high-powered delegation from the Gonja Kingdom led by Sonyowura Kanyiti, has visited the Gbeniyiri community following the recent violent disturbances in the area. The visit was directed by the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii Kunuto Jewu Soale I, to commiserate with the community and assess the extent of destruction.
Speaking to the media, Minister Be-Awurbe confirmed that 31 deaths have so far been recorded since the outbreak of the Gonja–Lobi conflict. He indicated that the delegation had toured the Gbeniyiri chief’s palace, which was destroyed during the clashes, and also visited the sites where the first killings occurred.
The minister commended the security agencies for their swift intervention, noting that tensions in the area are gradually easing. He assured that security personnel have taken control of all border areas to prevent further disturbances.
The Chief of Tuna, Tunawura Daniel Safo Amantana, also addressed the media, stressing the need for peace. He said their presence in Gbeniyiri was to show solidarity and promote reconciliation. He further cautioned the Lobi/Brefos community against making inflammatory statements, urging all sides to exercise restraint so that lasting peace can prevail.
