Seven people have lost their lives and eighteen others sustained injuries following a fatal road traffic accident at Komenda Asamasa along the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway on Monday evening.
A statement filed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service in the Central Region on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, said the accident occurred at about 7:25 p.m. on January 12, 2026, involving a Sprinter bus with registration number GS 6705-21 travelling from Komenda towards Takoradi, and a Man Diesel truck, GS 8394 Y, travelling from Takoradi towards Cape Coast.
Firefighters from the Komenda Fire Station responded swiftly to the distress call and arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations.
The GNFS team extricated six victims who were trapped in the Sprinter bus after it veered off the road into a nearby bush. All six were pronounced dead on arrival at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.
The Service further disclosed that another female victim who had earlier been rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital before the arrival of the rescue team was also pronounced dead, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven.
The six victims extricated by the GNFS comprised three females, including a pregnant woman, one baby, and three males.
Meanwhile, eighteen other victims who sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rescued before the arrival of the fire service are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
Eyewitnesses told the GNFS that the Man Diesel truck reportedly lost control while overtaking another vehicle and collided head-on with the Sprinter bus travelling in the opposite direction.
After the rescue exercise, GNFS personnel cleared debris from the roadway to restore the free flow of traffic and ensure safety at the accident scene.
