The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has given the Member of Parliament (MP) responsible for the controversial “daughter of a murderer” comment one week to voluntarily identify themselves or face severe consequences.

Addressing the House on Tuesday, March 4, Speaker Bagbin condemned the comment as reckless and deeply troubling, stressing that such remarks undermine the dignity and decorum of Parliament.

He announced a formal investigation to uncover the identity of the MP involved, warning that failure to come forward would result in decisive action.

The Majority Leader has thrown his support behind the Speaker’s decision, urging the MP in question to take responsibility for their words.

This controversy stems from a derogatory remark directed at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, MP for Klottey Korle and daughter of late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

The incident occurred during a parliamentary session on February 4, amid discussions commemorating the 60th anniversary of Joseph Boakye Danquah’s death.

As Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressed the House, an unidentified MP from the backbenches interrupted, shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” The comment, widely seen as an attack on Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings’ late father, sparked outrage, with MPs expressing shock and disapproval.

Mr. Bagbin reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the integrity of Parliament and ensuring accountability among its members.
