Ghana’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation has initiated a formal inquiry into the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who tragically collapsed during a bout in Accra. Minister Kofi Adams inaugurated a seven-member Committee of Enquiry on Tuesday, April 8th, tasking them with a 21-day deadline to submit their findings.

The incident occurred on March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena during a fight. Olanrewaju was rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital but was pronounced dead.

The newly formed committee comprises a diverse group of experts:

Chairman: Ambassador Major (RTD) Amarkai Amarteifio
Peter Zwennes Esq.
Ekow Asmah
Samuel Bartels Esq.
Eddie Pappoe
Juliana Addo-Yobo Esq.
Martin Engmann

Speaking at the inauguration in Accra, Minister Adams emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the incident “cannot just be swept under the carpet.” He clarified that the committee’s mandate extends beyond the immediate circumstances of Olanrewaju’s death. The probe will also delve into broader regulatory and medical protocols within Ghana’s boxing fraternity, including its engagements on the international stage.

The Committee’s Terms of Reference are comprehensive:

To thoroughly investigate the circumstances leading to the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju at the Bukom Boxing Arena on March 29, 2025.

To assess whether the organizers and promoters of the boxing match adhered to international standards in taking adequate preventative measures to safeguard the boxer’s life.

To examine the due diligence and procedures followed by Nigerian licensing authorities in permitting the boxer to participate in an international match in Accra, considering his qualifications and experience.

To evaluate the conduct of all involved officials, both individually and collectively, and recommend sanctions for any actions that fall short of acceptable standards.

To propose necessary changes in technical and medical procedures to ensure the utmost safety in boxing.

To consider any other pertinent matters arising from the inquiry and provide appropriate recommendations to enhance boxing’s image and protect the interests and safety of all participants.

This decisive action by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation underscores the commitment to ensuring accountability and improving safety standards within the boxing industry following this deeply regrettable incident.
