2022 World Cup playoff: Baba Yara Sports Stadium to host Ghana-Nigeria clash

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has confirmed that it is addressing concerns raised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the Baba Yara and Cape Coast Sports Stadia.

This announcement comes after CAF granted temporary approval for the Accra Sports Stadium to host Ghana’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan on October 11, 2024. CAF had previously directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to find an alternative venue outside of Ghana due to the withdrawal of approval for the Baba Yara Stadium, which would have led to Ghana playing its first-ever home match abroad. This situation has now been resolved.

The ministry stated that repairs are underway at the Baba Yara and Cape Coast stadiums to avoid future CAF bans. In a statement released on Thursday, the ministry said, “Concurrently, issues raised by CAF regarding the Baba Yara and Cape Coast stadia are being addressed, and we look forward to another inspection by CAF soon, to restore the status of these national stadia as approved venues for CAF and FIFA matches.”

The ministry also expressed its gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to securing CAF approval for the Accra Sports Stadium and called for continued collaboration in the development, management, and upkeep of sports facilities nationwide.
